When we are children we are told that we need to go to school to learn. Children are often referred to as sponges as they can learn so much and are so eager to learn more.
If you spend time around small children, those who are allowed to be children that is. It is so easy to be swept up in their enthusiasm of learning new things. The questions they ask are so amazing and really make you stop and think. How much do I actually know or understand about things. Why is the sky blue? One I loved was why are my fingers different lengths? They are so desperate to learn things that interest them. They want to know more and look at the adults and older kids in their lives as fountains of information and ones who know it all.
When do we lose the love of learning?
That is a good question and one that will have many different answers. Some may have had bad experiences in school or home. Whatever the reason it happened and we cannot change that right now. All we can do is live in the moment and know that there is nothing that is stopping us from learning new things today. What happened years ago happened and is in the past.
Even before the internet we could access information and books which could help us in our journey of learning. With the age of the internet it has opened up so many more doors .
Ok it can actually be hard now to find relevant information online but it is there. It can be a challenge in itself to find the things we are looking for.
What is stopping us from learning things now?
No one knows everything, that is not possible. Even if you are introduced to a genius who seems to know so much I guarantee there are so many areas that they don’t know about. That is what makes us human.
Having a passion about something is usually a great start to learning even more about it and increasing your knowledge.
When you have the chance to talk with a child and listen to them talk about their passion. It could be about dinosaurs or dogs, football or animals, it doesn’t matter. To them it is the most important thing and they know so much about it. They love having the chance to talk about it and learn more about it. That passion for knowledge and learning is absolutely beautiful.
Yes, of course you can find this passion talking with adults too. I just find it so cute when children get so excited about their passion.
When you have learned a new skill the boost in your self confidence is huge.
Do you remember when you first learned how to ride a bike and the freedom it gave you. Thinking you could travel yourself. You can get to places. the fun of free wheeling down a hill and feeling the wind in your face.
The moment you learned to swim and dive. A wonderful and empowering feeling, or learning how to drive. These are all skills that had to be learned and we were eager to do it.
We knew that having the skill and knowledge would benefit us in so many ways.
Knowing and understanding things is a good thing.
Why we should keep educating ourselves
Some adults will say that they were told they were stupid as children and would never learn or amount to anything. That is a horrible thing to say to a child. Sometimes this barrier to learning is carried on to adulthood. Even for these people once they face the fear and realise that they can learn and when they know what they are learning is for their benefit and are eager to learn more it is so empowering.
We know what we know right now with the information we have right now. What could we learn if we push ourselves to understand more?
If scientists stopped at what they know right now we would never have the amazing discoveries and advancement in science.
What would have happened if explorers never ventured out into the world we would not have learned about the different countries or people that lived in them.
If innovators and entrepreneurs did not create things and find solutions to problems we would lead a sad life right now.
Keep educating yourself it is not only beneficial to your mind and brain to keep active but also your self confidence and overall health.
“I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.” – Mark Twain
What a smart man he was to have realised this so early on. I wonder what he would make of the schools nowadays?
