When You Fall Down

When you fall down, you got to pick yourself back up and keep on going because sometimes there isn’t going to be a person there to do it for you.

Does this only apply to when you physically fall down or trip? That you have to pick yourself up? Well it is always a good thing if you can pick yourself up whenever you physically fall. This implies that you are ok to be able to get back up and move again. Sometimes you may be alone and have to rely on yourself to do so. So it is a positive thing if you can literally pick yourself up if you fall.

Of course there are times when you do need help as you have injured yourself and really are not able to get up yourself so you need the help of others and possibly professionals such as paramedics.

Other types of falling

This also applies to life in general as we all experience setbacks or failures in life. We all go through difficult moments at various stages of our lives.

At these times it is important to take responsibility for your own life and recover, regain your ground and restore your confidence again.

Once you have recovered from this you have to just keep moving forward and focus on your goals or daily life. You can’t always rely on family, friends or anyone else to always be there for you. They have their own battles to face. Self reliance is sometimes the only option left to you and it is one that should be encouraged. It does not mean that there will never be any support when you need it. It just means that you know you can pick yourself up when you need to. Any time someone does help you it is something to be cherished as you appreciate the gesture.

Why could it matter?

- Self-reliance is encouraged

Lessons are learned each time a knock down occurs. You begin to notice what you need to do to get yourself back on your feet. What you need to do when you it happens. You develop problem solving skills and self confidence. This happens when you are not expecting others to rescue you each and every time something happens.

- Preparation for reality

Life happens and nothing is set in stone. unexpected situations happen and no one can predict them or be fully prepared for them. When things happen such as career setbacks like losing a job, health issues or personal loss the help or support from others may be delayed or limited as they themselves are going through their own situations.

Support may come but not immediately. Confronting it yourself is something that has to be done to keep going.

- Reduces the victim mentality

This form of self reliance eliminates the whole victim mentality. The first reflex is to pick yourself up. This is a form of inner strength that is such a positive thing. We all know some people thrive on the continuously playing the victim card and for some reason they have people jumping in to help them. It is almost as if they set themselves up for the fall in order to feel important and thrive on the help they receive. They love the compassion they get.

Sadly if you notice the people who do help are either changing as they realise they are being used or are in some kind of co dependence of needing to be the saviour. This is so sad on all levels.

Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, start all over again.

How to put this in practice

  1. Acknowledge the setback

Yes something happened and went wrong. It cannot be changed so now it has to be confronted. Denial just prolongs the agony and delays the recovery.

  1. Identify one solid step forward

No matter how small it may be just doing one simple action instils momentum. Go for a short walk to clear your head. Write down what happened to process it all. Send that one job application. Go for a workout at the gym. One small solid step forward.

  1. Set a short term deadline

Allow yourself a certain and clear timeframe for the action. This could be today, by tomorrow or this week. Give yourself the time to achieve it but not too much time to wallow.

  1. Execute this small step

Don’t overthink thinks. So it regardless of how you are currently feelings. Momentum builds up from action. Time to start moving forward.

  1. Reflect and adjust.

After you have completed the one small action take a moment. Assess what happened and how it helped you. Did it help or do you need to adjust it slightly or even totally. Now you can repeat the process over again. Think about one small actionable step you can do. Keep the momentum going.

Can you always pick yourself up?

No of course it does not always work. Nothing always works, There are always things that occur that are serious major.

If you have safety concerns with medical issues it is important to seek professional help.

There may be legal issues or even structural ones. Renovating a bathroom may seem simple at first and manageable. Have watched enough youtube videos. Then something serious happens and the professionals are needed.

We will all be in some kind of situation in our lives where we will need some professional help so it is important to identify them when they happen.

What happens when you fall down?

We all lead our own lives and it has a way of throwing some punches and sometimes you will be knocked down. It happens to all of us. Being able to get back up on your own feet so to say is essential. Begin to move forward because there will not always be help from others around when you need it.

Building up your own resilience and self-confidence is something so positive for all of us. It cultivates an inner strength to face the challenges life may throw out at us.

When someone helps you along the way it is acknowledged and appreciated more.

Learning to rely on yourself is one of life's hardest but most important lessons.
