So what does January mean anyway?
Christmas is over and the new year has come and gone and we are in the month of January.
Most of us feel deflated and at a loss as the holiday season has just ended along with the party and celebrations that we enjoyed. For some it was a hard time of year depending on the current situation in life.
Then the realisation that the next holiday is so many weeks if not months away. It seems out of reach. Some may have overindulged in December eating and drinking too much.
January may also be the worst time when it comes to financial overload as one thinks about all the bills and expenses that are about to hit. It is the one of the dark months of the year for the northern hemisphere.
This all ties it together as a doom and gloom month or it can easily be seen as such.
The meaning of January
Have you ever wondered what does it mean and what was it known for.
Most of the world follows the Gregorian calendar and it is a solar based one following a 365 day cycle (apart from the leap years of course)
It is split into twelve months. What was there beforehand? well that would be the Roman calendar which was a lunar one. This meant that only 10 months of the year were named as two months were considered as rest months and not much could be done. So the year began in March.
January is named after Janus who was a Roman god. His domain was gates, doors, beginnings and transitions. The god Janus was often depicted as having two heads. One was facing the past and one the future. This was to symbolize the end of the year or past and the new year and the future.
That is quite a nice way of thinking about January. A chance to look back at what has happened and then turn to the future and all the possibilities that lie ahead.
This is the reason that people make new year resolutions. They hope to use the inspiration and opportunities to achieve goals and dreams. Hold ourselves accountable and motivate us to carry it through.

New beginnings
We can also look at the month of January as one filled with promise of new beginnings and hope.
Personally I love it as this feels brand new. A time we change the year. How amazing is that? Everybody or most people in the world have agreed that it is now a whole new year and we all have to adjust to a new date.
I don’t know about you but it always takes me a while before it becomes automatic. I find myself writing the previous year if I do not concentrate and focus on it. Yes that could be well into February depending what I am doing when I need to write or think about the year.
January may be a down month or sad month for many people. It can feel dark and gloomy, wet and cold. Even windy at times. Mother nature is asleep or dormant. One craves for sunshine and warmth again.
Then the magic begins
If you notice the little things in nature you can see nature waking up again and that is in itself amazing. Depending on where you live and the kind of plants, flowers and trees that are there.
I watch out for the snow drops and the daffodil leaves start to sprout.
Buds may even make their appearance on trees and bushes, It all depends on the kind of weather. The beauty of mother nature awakening.
Slightly longer days.
If you are someone who wakes up at the same time every morning and runs through a routine of things preparing yourself and your family for the day then you will also notice the sun rising earlier.
It is not something that is major or can be spotted in 24 hours. No, it is subtle and exciting.
Even when there are a few days or even week of grey cloudy skies and no chance of sunshine, the very day that the sky is clear and the sun starts to rise you can see the change in light.
All these natural changes spark a positive feeling that inspires me to keep going.
Embrace the beauty of January
Life can throw all kind of challenges your way. We cannot control all that happens around us. For this reason taking the time to see what nature is doing changes the whole perspective of things.
The feeling that if nature is awakening and beginning the new cycle of life why can’t you.
The days are slowly getting longer and that means more possibilities and more time for sunshine or daylight
It is for these reasons and more that January is a truly beautiful month of transition.
A chance to think about what happened in the past year, both the good and the bad and then turn you head to the future and the year ahead. This allows you to think positively about the opportunities that lie ahead for you this year.
